High School Students Launch Successful Food Waste Reduction Program

A group of enterprising high school students has made a significant impact on their community’s sustainability efforts. The “Waste Not, Want Not” initiative, started by juniors at Central High, partners with local restaurants to collect unsold food and redistribute it to homeless shelters and food banks. In just six months, the program has diverted over 5,000 pounds of food from landfills. “We saw two problems – food waste and hunger – and realized we could address both at once,” says student leader Alex Chen. The success has inspired neighboring schools to start similar programs, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
